The official statement from Pennzoil; “The collaboration with Nintendo’s Mario Kart franchise marks two iconic brands coming together as leaders on the front lines in their respective industries. Mario Karting Reimagined is sure to surprise SXSW attendees with the way that it uses the iconic elements of the Mario Kart 8 video game to capture the inspiration behind PurePlus Technology, pushing the boundaries of innovation and imagination.”.

Pennzoil was the “Official Motor Oil & Fuel Sponsor of SXSW 2014 Interactive, who had teamed up with iconic video game brand Nintendo to recreate Mario Kart 8 at SXSW by building an experiential marketing campaign that integrated a custom-built track out side the Palmer Events Center. This became an event, and made free to the attendees of SXSW Interactive and Gaming.

This aimed to give their visitors a truly interactive Mario Kart experience. The track had big icons that served as power-ups and  accelerated and slowed the cars just like in Mario Kart world. If the player collected all give icons or power-ups, one would achieve, “full protection”.

This may have made it to the record books as being one of our all time favorite experiential marketing campaigns.
